Chapter Seven
After the night when they really talked about the past, it was nearly three weeks before Nate came again. Jimmy had started to get scared that he would never return. But, when the television news showed reports of freedom movement activity at the other end of the country, he stopped worrying if Nate was coming back and started worrying whether he was even alive.
The State was hitting the movement harder than ever before.
Whatever happened though, Jimmy made sure he always came home alone, always sent his driver away before he came round the back of the house. Always waited for a moment before he pushed his disappointment down and went inside.
Late one night, when he’d already given up any hope, Nate called out a hushed, “Hey,” just as Jimmy was about to open the back door. Nate was panting, face flushed as though he’d been running.
“Hi,” Jimmy said.
“I didn’t think I’d catch you before you went indoors.”
“You could always knock?”
“No.” Nate did up his jacket, pulling up the collar before sitting down and making himself comfortable.
Jimmy thought about asking why not, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to hear the answer. Instead he nodded, accepting. “You’re not dead then. I was…beginning to wonder.”
“Yeah.” Nate stretched his legs out. “Not dead, even though it’s been a tough few weeks.”
“That bad?”
“Depends what you mean by bad.” Nate shrugged. “We did our thing. Some people joined us. Some did their damnedest to stop us. It was hard but…”
“But?”
“No, no but. Hard but necessary and we made progress. Another step in the right direction, as Heidi would say.”
Jimmy bounced the keys in his hand, eyes fixed on Nate. “If you had been dead, I’d never have known, would I? Not unless it was on the news.”
“I doubt I’m important enough for that.” Nate shrugged again. “You’d find out eventually though.”
“Yeah?” Jimmy raised a disbelieving eyebrow. “Who’d bother to tell me?”
“Well.” A slow grin crept across Nate’s face. “You are still my legal owner. The State would send you the bill for getting rid of my body.”
“Oh shut the fuck up.” Jimmy turned away, rubbing a hand over his mouth before looking back. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure. Not guaranteeing I’ll answer it, but ask away.”
“Why do you come back here?” Jimmy asked. “I mean, why do you come and see me?”
Nate hesitated for a long, long moment, studying Jimmy. “I don’t know. I don’t understand it myself really. I shouldn’t want to. Everyone says I shouldn’t but…” He shrugged.
“You don’t understand why?”
Nate chewed at his lip, eyes still on Jimmy. “The whole wanting to come here thing fucking scares me and I don’t get it and…”
“Come on, gut reaction. Why are you here right now?”
Again Nate shrugged, an odd hitch of one shoulder. “Because I know where I am with you?” he said at last. “Because you’ve never lied to me.”
“I’ve never lied…” The concept left Jimmy gasping and he had to sit down. “But? That’s fucking madness.”
“No it’s not. You lied to yourself.
